Community Colleges Should Be Open Access Essay - 1818 Words

The issue of whether community colleges should be open access has been plaguing 2-year institutions for some time now. When the idea of open access first became relevant to community colleges back in the 1960 s, it was implemented as a way to diversify the student population by allowing minorities, low-income, non-traditional, and academically challenged students the opportunity for education past the high school level without any questions. Students that were categorized in one or more of those groups typically wouldn t be admitted to institutions of higher learning that possess limited access. As a result enrollment numbers in community colleges begin to rise until the turn of the twenty-first century. It was at this time that institutions start realizing the financial burden that allowing open access was causing. The funding from the state and community partners wasn t enough to keep up with enrollment. When budgets are cut at community colleges, it forces enrollment caps on clas ses and special programming to be cut. Anson and Scherer (2014) explored the need for an updated version of the policy for open access would help achieve the goals of community college. Goals should such as improved college readiness and completion, increased financial support for promising low-income students, efficient use of public and private resources, and ultimately, greater security and prosperity for Americans.
